Sheffield is a city in South Yorkshire, England. It was named because of its origins in a field on the River Sheaf that runs through the city.

With a population of over half a million people, Sheffield has grown from its industrial roots to encompass a wide economic base. There is also the wider Sheffield Urban Area, which extends beyond the city proper, and including this area of Sheffield the population grows to over 600,000.

Sheffield is probably best known for its production of Steel and many technical innovations within the industry were forged from Sheffield companies.

Over the past century the city have seen extensive re-development and is now very much on the cultural and commercial map. While steel continues to be made in Sheffield, other industries have grown including media agencies, online marketing agencies and online service providers.

The city of Sheffield is geographically diverse, located at the confluence of five rivers, with much of the city having been built on hillsides with views into the city centre or out to the countryside. With an estimated total of over two million trees, Sheffield has more trees per person than any other city in Europe.
